What a dental implant is
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with an artificial support. A titanium implant is placed in the jawbone, and a crown, bridge or prosthesis is attached to it. When a single tooth is restored, this method usually does not require the neighbouring healthy teeth to be prepared.
An implant can be planned for one missing tooth, for several, or for all of them. To choose the right method, the doctor assesses bone volume, the condition of the gums, your general health and the medicines you take.
Stages of implant treatment
Consultation and digital planning
Treatment starts with a consultation. The doctor decides which examinations are needed, including three-dimensional tomography. From that we assess bone volume, the position of the nerve and other anatomical structures, and plan where the implant will sit. Together we go through the stages, the timing and the cost.
Placing the implant
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. How long the procedure takes depends on the number of implants and how complex the treatment is. Anaesthesia is discussed with the doctor in advance, taking your health and the treatment plan into account.
The implant bonding with the bone
Osseointegration then begins: the implant bonds with the bone. This stage often takes 3–6 months. Whether a temporary tooth or prosthesis can be worn while it heals is assessed individually.
Fitting the crown or prosthesis
Once healing has been assessed, we take a digital impression. The laboratory makes an individual crown or the other restoration that was planned. When choosing between zirconia and metal-ceramic, we take into account where the tooth sits, the load it will take and what the smile needs.
Implants when there is not enough bone
Too little bone does not always rule an implant out. In some cases the bone has to be built up, which is called augmentation, or a sinus lift is needed in the side of the upper jaw. The extra procedure can be done before the implant or at the same time. That decision, and how long healing will take, is made individually; the whole treatment may last several months longer.

Is dental implant treatment painful
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, which makes it painless. Afterwards there may be pain, swelling or discomfort. The doctor gives you individual instructions for care and for managing pain.
How long does the treatment take
The full time covers preparation, placing the implant, healing and fitting the final restoration. The implant itself can be placed in a single visit, but the prosthodontic treatment that follows usually starts several months later. That part, as a rule, takes 10–15 days. If bone has to be added or another preparatory procedure is needed, the time increases; the number of visits is set by your plan.
How long does a dental implant last
With proper care an implant can last for many years. The result is affected by oral hygiene, regular check-ups, smoking and general health, and in some cases by genetics as well. The crown and other components may need repair or replacement over time.
Can a tooth be restored in one day
In some cases a temporary tooth can be attached as soon as the implant is placed. Whether that is possible is judged from the diagnostics and the clinical situation. A temporary tooth is an intermediate stage of treatment; the final restoration is made according to the plan.
